FAQs about GAF California Cool Shingles

What is California Energy Code (Title 24)? +

California's Building Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential Buildings (Title 24, Part 6) contain requirements for the thermal emittance, three-year aged reflectance, and Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of roofing materials used in new construction and re-roofing projects.

What are the benefits of cool roof shingles? +

A cool roof is a roof that reflects more solar energy away from its surface and more efficiently radiates absorbed heat away from the building than other roofs. This helps air-conditioned buildings use less energy. You may want to install a cool roof to reduce building energy use, lower utility bills, improve the comfort inside the building, help reduce peak energy demand, and/or help combat local urban heat islands.

How can California Cool shingles be used to comply with cool roof requirements? +

A cool roof is made of a material or has a coating that can lower the roof surface temperature, decreasing the amount of heat transferred into a residential or commercial building. Typically, roofs that are lighter in color or are reflective stay cooler than roofs that absorb sunlight. With GAF California Cool shingles, homeowners no longer need to compromise on dark colors for reflectivity, thanks to EcoDark granule technology. This technology provides both deep, rich color blends and reflectivity, allowing GAF to offer the darkest highly-reflective shingle color available: Timberline HDZ RS in Charcoal.

*Can be used to comply with the Cool Roof Requirements for steep slope residential buildings of 2022 Title 24, Part 6, of the California Code of Regulations.

**Energy cost savings are not guaranteed, and the amount of savings may vary based on climate zone, utility rates, radiative properties of roofing products, insulation levels, HVAC equipment efficiency, and other factors.

***Calculated using the Title 24 Solar Reflective Index (SRI) Calculation Worksheet
